As summer gave way to autumn, Greece was witnessing a rare event: two musical icons from very different eras and musical backgrounds filled stadiums, sold out their concert tickets in record time, and proved that music is still the pulse of the country.
On the one hand, there’s Lex, the rapper whose voice speaks to a younger, socially sensitive generation. On the other hand, Anna Vissi, a legendary artist with a career spanning more than five decades, still draws huge crowds and enjoys the loyalty of her fans. Together, their 2025 tours mark what many in the industry are calling the cultural phenomenon of the year.
Lex, born in Thessaloniki and raised in Athens, has been steadily making his mark on the rap scene for years. However, what has changed in recent months is the scale. His April 2025 concert at the outdoor venue of the Olympic Stadium of Athens (OAKA) was initially announced via Instagram. Tickets sold out in less than 24 hours, breaking every previous record for a Greek artist. When he took to the stage on June 28, 2025, around 60,000 people had gathered at OAKA. A second night was added, which drew about 40,000 people, meaning that over 100,000 people in two nights at OAKA saw Lex live.
Although Lex doesn’t rely on lavish advertising campaigns, his social media presence, his reputation for his direct and hard-hittingly true lyrics, and his resonance on issues of interest to the younger generation seem to be enough. His popularity is a sign: rap and hip-hop have moved from the alternative scenes to the mainstream spotlight – and the numbers prove it.
In two nights at the Kallimarmaro, Anna Vissi attracted a total of more than 130,000 fans.
Anna Vissi.
If Lex reflects the rising generation, then Vissy evokes the endurance, artistic virtuosity that has been shaped over decades, and emotional connection to multiple generations. In October 2024, Vissi performed at the Panathenaic Stadium (Kallimarmaro), attracting 65,000 spectators. It was one of the best-attended solo artist concerts in modern Greek history. Following the huge success, Vissi announced her return to the Kallimarmaro in September 2025. The first performance (13 September) sold out in just four days, resulting in a second night (14 September) being added. In those two nights, Vissi attracted a total of over 130,000 fans.
Beyond the numbers, what stands out is the scale and complexity of her production, which cost over 700,000 euros. Thousands of spectators, high-quality sets, dancers, whole bands, and a huge emotional resonance with songs that many know by heart. Vissi remains more than just a performer. In many ways, she is a symbol of Greek pop history, identity, and timeless charm.
Why are they phenomenal?
So why are these concerts not only referred to as great performances, but also as defining cultural moments?
-Record: Both Lex and Vissi have equaled or surpassed previous records. Lex’s concerts at OAKA represent the largest hip-hop/rap audience for a Greek artist in that venue, while Vissi’s audience numbers for a solo artist have reached levels not seen in decades.
-Mass appeal across all generations. Lex resonates with younger people, teenagers, people in their 20s, 30s, 40s, or even 60s, who see in him authenticity, social criticism, and lyricism. Vissi, on the other hand, resonates with many generations: older fans who grew up with her, middle-aged listeners, and younger people who may know her from streaming, collaborations, or pop culture.
-Ticket sell-out rate and demand. Selling out of tickets in a few hours or days is nothing new in major markets, but for Greece, especially for certain venues and artists, it is rare. Lex sold out of tickets for OAKA in less than a day. Vissi is in such high demand that new shows are being added to her concert schedule.
-Show and production. Both performances are more than music. Visual effects, direction, stunning performances (for example, Lex brings Haroula Alexiou to the stage), choreography, orchestrations, have created an immersive experience. Audiences leave not only moved by the performance, but also with the feeling that they have had an unforgettable experience.
It’s certainly tempting to contrast them, old versus young, rap versus pop, new voice versus heritage. But really, the story is richer because both can thrive simultaneously, even when their audiences overlap in odd ways. Perhaps the most important factor that propels them to touch the hearts of so many people is ultimately their symbolic resonance. Greece has gone through economic crises, political tensions, turmoil, and debates about our identity. Art and culture often reflect and shape the way people feel about their country, their hopes and disappointments.
Lex’s socially conscious rap and Anna Vissi’s songs expressing love, loss, identity, and both have a resonance that transcends entertainment, whose forms need not be compared or contrasted, simply coexist.
