Mexico: 76 dead from floods and landslides – 27 people missing

The bad weather resulted in 199 communities being cut off - 12,700 soldiers and marines have been deployed to the affected areas

Newsroom October 20 10:32

At least 76 dead and 27 missing is the toll so far from the floods and landslides that have hit central and eastern Mexico in the last ten days.

The bad weather, with unusually heavy rainfall for several days, destroyed roads, cutting off 119 communities, authorities said in a report presented at the daily press briefing by the country’s president, Claudia Seinbaum.

Rescue teams have not yet completed their work, Seinbaum said, announcing that the first tranche of emergency financial aid, which will reach 466 million euros, had been given to some 100,000 families.

Most of the isolated communities, 65 in total, are in Indalgo state, which borders the capital, because many of them are mountainous and roads were destroyed by landslides.

Veracruz, in the Gulf of Mexico, has also been badly affected. Many of its communities are crossed by rivers that overflow within hours when the rain starts.

A total of 12,700 soldiers and marines have been deployed to the affected areas. Several airlift bridges have also been set up to send aid to stranded communities.
