In Kherson southern Ukraine, Angelina Jolie, former UN ambassador for refugees, was unexpectedly found on Wednesday.

The American actress visited medical facilities, including a maternity hospital and a children’s hospital in a city under Russian control for several months in 2022.

The visit appears to have included some unexpected events.

At a checkpoint, authorities reportedly discovered that one of Jolie’s bodyguards had not completed his military service and immediately escorted him to a recruitment office. The situation was resolved only after Jolie’s personal intervention.

A local official, Vitalii Bohdanov, posted a photo on Facebook showing Angelina Jolie wearing a bulletproof vest bearing Ukrainian insignia.

Neither the actress nor the Ukrainian government made any public statement about the visit.

The Hollywood star — who served as a UN Refugee Agency envoy from 2012 to 2022 — had previously visited Ukraine a few months after Russia’s invasion began, meeting with displaced people in Lviv, in the western part of the country.
