The commercial operation of five additional, flexible gas turbine units at the PEC Group power plants in Rhodes and Crete has begun, having already helped to ensure the islands’ energy sufficiency during this year’s summer season. The next station is Chios, where another new gas turbine plant is expected to enter commercial operation later this year, with the total capacity of these plants exceeding 220MW.

At the same time, the total capacity of the wind farm will be 220 million cubic metres, comprising 220 million cubic metres of wind turbines, equivalent to 220MWh.

At the same time, the installation of two new gas turbine units in Lesvos, with a total capacity of 29MW, is in full swing. These units are expected to start their trial operation in early 2026. Additionally, two new gas turbine units were commissioned in Santorini in December 2024.

The new, state-of-the-art, dual-fuel gas turbine units are designed to increase the production capacity of the plants on the islands, thus ensuring their energy sufficiency, while their use also contributes to the reduction of final HSE costs. The replacement of heavy fuel oil (HFO) by diesel (LFO), together with the modern air and particulate emission reduction systems of the new gas turbine plants, contributes to reducing the environmental footprint. Finally, the noise level of the new gas turbine units, which does not exceed 65db at the plant boundaries, is lower than that of the existing units, further enhancing the environmental benefits.

Two additional new power projects are underway in the island of Greece

In order to further strengthen the energy shielding of the islands, PPC Group continues to invest in modern, flexible power plants that contribute to the uninterrupted coverage of its growing energy needs. The Group’s plan for next year includes two additional projects in island Greece, in Chios and Rhodes, where new replacement of existing units with modern, gas-fired turbines is planned, which fully comply with the requirements of the environmental legislation of the European Union and Greece.
