The French president says lasting peace requires strong cooperation between the United States and Europe

Newsroom December 5 02:30

French President Emmanuel Macron, speaking during his visit to China, urged Europe and the United States to maintain strong military support for Ukraine. He also asked for greater pressure on the Russian economy and for firm unity between Europe and the U.S. in their stance against Moscow.

“We must continue the war effort and increase pressure on the Russian economy,” Macron said. He stressed that unity between Americans and Europeans “is essential for the Ukrainian cause.”

Macron warned against any division between the two sides of the Atlantic.
“We cannot allow any division between Europeans and Americans,” he said. “We need the United States to secure peace. The United States needs us so that this peace is stable and long-term.”

European Leaders Voice Concerns About Trump Administration

According to Der Spiegel, Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and other European leaders expressed distrust toward the Trump administration’s intentions in managing the Ukraine issue.

The magazine reported that Macron raised concerns during a call with his European counterparts, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. He warned of the risk that “the United States could betray Ukraine on territorial matters without providing clear security guarantees.”
