Nick Rainer was reportedly diagnosed with schizophrenia just weeks before the horrific murders of his parents, Rob and Michelle Rainer, and the medication he was taking caused him to behave “erratically and dangerously,” according to tmz.com.

According to the U.S. outlet, two sources said that Nick, 32, was under the care of a psychiatrist for mental illness, noting that his behavior had become “alarming” in the weeks leading up to the fatal stabbing of his parents.

He Had Been Admitted to a Rehabilitation Center

He was reportedly recently admitted to a high-cost rehabilitation facility based in Los Angeles that specializes in mental illness and substance abuse, the report said, adding that his substance abuse had worsened his schizophrenia.

Three to four weeks before the murders, doctors allegedly changed Nick’s medication, at which point he “completely lost touch with reality,” the same sources told tmz.com.

Adjusting to New Medication

He was reportedly in the process of adjusting to his new medication—which was supposed to stabilize his condition—when tragedy struck.

According to the same report, Nick Rainer is likely to plead not guilty by reason of insanity in court.
