Ioannina: Snow Chains Mandatory Due to Snowfall and Frost
To ensure safe traffic and prevent accidents, the Ioannina Police Department announced temporary traffic regulations on sections of the road network due to heavy snowfall and icy conditions.
According to the Police Department Director’s decision, all vehicles, regardless of type, must carry snow chains or equivalent traction devices if they do not have tires suitable for snow driving.
Chains must be installed in safe areas of the road network, without creating obstacles or additional risks, following the necessary warning measures as stipulated by the Traffic Code.
Violators will be prosecuted according to the Traffic Code (Law 5209/25), while the Ioannina Traffic Department and Mixed-Jurisdiction Police Departments are authorized to conduct inspections and enforce additional traffic measures as needed.
The decision is already in effect, covering the period of severe weather, enhancing the safety of drivers and citizens in hazardous sections of the local road network.
In cooperation with the police, a ban on trucks over 3.5 tons has been enforced on the Egnatia Highway, with heavy fines for drivers not carrying snow chains.
