New anti-bureaucracy bill: The three pillars to better public services

Presentation by Hatzidakis at 12:00 – The bill draws on recommendations from the Ombudsman and real-life experiences from the 2025 questionnaires

A significant blow against bureaucracy and the “immortal Greek public sector” is what the government aims to deliver with a new bill, to be presented today at noon by the Vice President of the Government, Kostis Hatzidakis.

Under the title “Interventions for a More Citizen-Friendly State,” the legislative initiative promises to put an end to the incredible daily hardship faced by millions of citizens in their dealings with the public sector, making use of recommendations from the Greek Ombudsman and real experiences recorded in the 2025 questionnaires.

According to information, the core of the reform will focus on three central interventions:

Public sector employees: Those who refuse evaluation for two consecutive years will be dismissed – Changes to the new disciplinary law

  1. Combating bureaucracy by replacing a series of certificates (which the state already possesses) with a simple sworn declaration by the citizen. This measure is expected to be applied immediately in 15–20 types of transactions.
  2. A definitive “truce” in long-standing legal disputes between the State and property owners, with the State refraining from claiming citizens’ properties (as was the case in areas such as Saronida and Karditsa) in situations where there is no realistic chance of winning, based on Supreme Court case law.
  3. Extending the EFKA pension fast-track model, which uses certified professionals, to other critical areas such as agricultural subsidies, and introducing competition to ensure faster service for taxpayers.
