Ten centuries-old olive trees in New Heraklion, Attica

The Municipality of Nea Irakleio has received ten centuries-old olive trees through a transplantation program run by OSE and will integrate them into the city’s parks. These trees come from areas where railway works are being carried out and, instead of being cut down, are relocated and offered to municipalities that wish to adopt them, with funding from the Green Fund

Newsroom February 18 07:30

The Municipality of Nea Irakleio has already received and transplanted more than 50 centuries-old and very old olive trees, and has now taken delivery of ten more, which have already begun to be planted in parks and public spaces across the city, such as Ritsos Square.

“These particular trees come from the area of Agios Vasileios, and we are proud to now have them in our municipality,” said the Deputy Mayor responsible, Christos Tsoulouchas.

The Mayor of Nea Irakleio, Nikos Babalos, added: “This is not the first time we have taken such an initiative. In the past as well, we have planted olive trees, strengthening green spaces and giving our neighborhoods room to breathe. The olive tree is a symbol of peace, resilience, and continuity. That is what we want for Irakleio: more shade, more oxygen, and more life in our public spaces. We continue steadily to invest in greenery and in the quality of life of our citizens.”
