The incident took place under unclear circumstances while the man was performing maintenance work on a ship docked at the port.

According to flashnews.gr, personnel from the Heraklion Port Authority and an EKAB ambulance rushed to the scene. The man was taken unconscious and was transported to PAGNI Hospital, where his death was confirmed.
