Surging waters from Ardas dam flow from Bulgaria into Greece, reaching Evros

"At this time 510 cubic meters of water per second are falling from the dam," said the deputy mayor of Triogon-Kyprinos of the Municipality of Orestiada, Emmanuel Hatzipangiotou

Newsroom February 26 04:00

Battling against time and the power of the many rushing waters, organizations and residents of Evros are fighting against the floods that are occurring due to the overflow of the Evros River and the breaking of many embankments.

At the Arda River dam, located between the villages of Kyprinos and Therapeio, as shown in the video of protothema.gr, the waters coming from Bulgaria are too much and with momentum they continue their journey through Arda to end up in the Evros River, which runs along the prefecture of the same name.

“Currently 510 cubic meters of water per second are falling from the dam,” the deputy mayor of Triogon-Kyprinos of the Municipality of Orestiada, Emmanuel Hatzipangiotou, told protothema.gr, adding that compared to previous days there is a reduction in the amount of water.

However, the volume of water remains high and large and, more importantly, it is ending up in an already polluted environment. Besides, the Evros River, in addition to the waters brought by Ardas from Bulgaria, is also filling up with the waters of the Tunja River coming from Turkey.

The battle of the competent services continues intensively in many parts of Soufli and Didymoteicho, with everyone’s attention focused on the strength of the embankments and their reinforcements to avoid the possibility of flooding a village and settlement.
