A historic silver medal from the first modern Olympic Games, held in Athens in 1896, was sold for nearly four times its estimated value, setting a record at an auction that took place last Sunday.

According to Reuters, the silver medal from the 1896 Athens Olympic Games — considered one of the most significant artifacts in Olympic history — was sold for 900,000 Danish kroner ($141,658.67), excluding the buyer’s premium, or 1,152,000 Danish kroner ($181,323.09) including additional fees, at an auction organized by Bruun Rasmussen Arts Auctioneers.

The estimated price ranged between 200,000 and 300,000 Danish kroner ($31,480–$47,220). However, the medal far exceeded expectations, as it was sold for at least four times the anticipated amount.
