Ankara reacts to Patriots in Karpathos: “The Dodecanese are under demilitarization,” says Turkish Foreign Ministry

The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement following recent developments regarding the “demilitarization status” of the Aegean islands, in response to the transfer of Patriot missiles to Karpathos

It is recalled that yesterday a Navy landing ship docked at the port of Pigadia in Karpathos in the morning, followed by the unloading of the air defense systems.

Ankara notes that “we consider the recent statements, which contradict the demilitarization status of the Aegean islands, to be frivolous, unfortunate, and untimely.”

The Turkish Foreign Ministry adds:
“There is no doubt regarding the objective legal status of the islands in the Eastern Aegean and the Dodecanese, which were placed under demilitarization under the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne and the 1947 Paris Peace Treaty.

Because of this, it is not surprising that certain circles, seeking to exploit recent developments in our region and attempting to poison our bilateral relations with our NATO ally Greece, are trying to create a new fait accompli.”

“Any action taken by these circles, who accuse Turkey of revisionism in violation of international law, is invalid. Even more striking is that the same mindset, which in the past sought to exterminate the Turkish Cypriots who were co-owners of the island of Cyprus, now claims to protect them. We want it to be known that the Turkish Cypriots and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, with the support of the Motherland and guarantor Turkey, are capable of ensuring their own security and do not depend on anyone else.

“The developments in our region once again demonstrate the importance of a sincere commitment to peace and stability. We take this opportunity to remind those circles, who are accustomed to making unfounded claims and spreading disinformation against our country for internal political reasons, that we will not allow fait accompli actions and call on them to exercise common sense,” the statement concludes.
