A U.S. F-35 fighter jet made an emergency landing at a U.S. air base in the Middle East after reportedly coming under fire believed to have originated from an Iranian attack, according to sources briefed on the incident cited by CNN.
If the source of the strike is confirmed, it would mark the first time Iran has hit a U.S. aircraft in the war that began in late February.
Captain Tim Hawkins, spokesperson for U.S. Central Command, noted that “the aircraft landed safely and the pilot is in stable condition, while the incident is under investigation.”
Note that the aircraft, which belongs to the fifth generation of stealth fighters, was on a “military mission over Iran” when it was forced to make an emergency landing.
Both the U.S. and Israel are operating F-35 aircraft in the conflict, each costing over $100 million.
