In statements, Vice Chancellor Andreas Babler said the government aims to move quickly toward a solution “because we know it will take more time at the EU level.”

He added that the government wants to establish specific rules for social media platforms and push for age restrictions to be implemented across the European Union.

Austria joins a growing list of countries within the EU—and beyond—seeking ways to protect children from the effects of social media. Spain, France, Denmark, Portugal, and Greece are also moving forward with plans to impose age restrictions.
