Greek short film earns recognition at international festivals

The United States marks the next stop for the new short film by Giorgos Chrysanthakopoulos, “1 Million Deaths”

Newsroom April 7 05:25

The film will be screened on Holy Saturday, April 11, at the Poppy Jasper International Film Festival in California. It is one of the few examples of Greek “high-concept” sci-fi to gain recognition at major U.S. festivals.

The California-based short film festival has been listed among the “25 Coolest Film Festivals in the World” by MovieMaker magazine.

The story unfolds in a world nearly wiped out by a deadly virus. Three teenagers wander through a devastated landscape, burdened by actions that have permanently marked them.

The film has already been selected for screening at several other major international festivals, including the Dam Short Film Festival in Nevada, the San Jose International Short Film Festival—one of Silicon Valley’s most important Oscar-qualifying festivals—and the London Breeze Film Festival, in the “IMPACT” category, which highlights films with a strong social message. These selections further confirm its growing presence on the international short film circuit.

“Unlike my previous work, this time I chose to place teenagers at the center of the story,” says the film’s creator, Giorgos Chrysanthakopoulos. “I wanted to explore the collapse of morality through the eyes of those who need a future the most, yet have the fewest defenses against guilt. My characters are not victims—they are survivors forced to grow up abruptly through choices no human being should ever have to make,” the director adds.
