Former Turkish Minister of Defense and current Chairman of the Defense Committee of the Turkish Grand National Assembly, Hulusi Akar, made provocative statements.
In a post on X, Akar stated that “in the homeland of the Turkish Cypriots, those who dream of Easter…will experience their last Easter.”
At the same time, on April 2, he had claimed that the existence of two sovereign and equal states on the island constitutes, in his view, an inevitable development.
The statements of the former Turkish minister bring the Cyprus issue back into the spotlight, at a time when the matter remains highly sensitive on both diplomatic and geopolitical levels.
