A prominent figure among Iranian dissidents has sharply criticized European governments for failing to take stronger action against a surge in executions in Iran, describing the trend as a wartime crackdown on dissent.

According to Iran’s judiciary-affiliated Mizan news agency, authorities carried out the execution of a man convicted of spying for Israeli intelligence and allegedly providing sensitive information.

Speaking at the European Parliament, Mariam Rajavi—president-elect of the Paris-based National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI)—condemned what she called the European Union’s silence.

“The silence of EU leaders and member states in the face of this wave of political executions in Iran is unjustifiable,” Rajavi said. She warned that such inaction not only emboldens Tehran to continue executions but also signals weakness, potentially encouraging further nuclear development and regional intervention.

The NCRI serves as the political wing of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI), a key opposition group.

Rajavi claimed that, even before the latest execution, at least 16 political prisoners had been executed within a month, including eight individuals linked to the PMOI.

The developments come amid ongoing tensions and internal unrest. Iranian authorities reportedly killed thousands during anti-government protests in January, marking the most significant domestic upheaval since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Following U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran in late February—reportedly aimed in part at weakening the government—there has been little sign of organized internal opposition. However, human rights organizations warn that authorities are intensifying repression.

Norway-based group Human Rights Iran reported that at least 3,646 people have been arrested in recent months, including 767 detentions since a ceasefire took effect on April 8.

Rights advocates say the figures highlight a growing crackdown as Tehran moves to suppress dissent during a period of heightened geopolitical tension.
