Similarities between bank robbery in Kato Tithorea and earlier attack in Mesolongi; “they may have been holding grenades,” say employees

Particular concern is being raised by employees’ testimonies regarding the bank robbery that took place this morning at a bank branch in Kato Tithorea, according to which the perpetrators may have been holding objects resembling grenades.

At the same time, according to police sources, today’s incident shows similarities to a robbery that took place on April 4, 2025, at a Piraeus Bank branch in Katochi, Mesolongi, when two to three masked perpetrators stole around €200,000 while holding hostages for several minutes.

Following today’s robbery, the perpetrators reportedly fled in a car that had been stolen from Piraeus, heading towards the Parnassos area via Amfikleia, while a large-scale operation by the Hellenic Police is underway to locate them.

The robbers, who had their faces covered (one wore a cap, mask, and checked shirt) and were carrying heavy weapons, entered the bank shortly after the branch opened.

According to testimonies, the two to three armed perpetrators who struck at 10 a.m. remained inside the branch for almost half an hour, until the time-delay mechanism for opening the vault was completed. During their escape, witnesses report that they were carrying bags of money, while some banknotes reportedly fell to the ground, suggesting a rushed getaway.
