American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association announced that His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America has officially proclaimed May 17, 2026, as “AHEPA Sunday” throughout the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.

In an official encyclical addressed to clergy, parish councils, schools, youth organizations, and the broader Greek Orthodox community in the United States, Archbishop Elpidophoros praised AHEPA’s longstanding contribution not only to the Greek-American community, but also to wider American society.

Quoting the ancient Greek rhetorician Isocrates — “the name Hellene suggests no longer a race, but an intelligence” — the Archbishop emphasized that Hellenism represents a broader civilizational ideal rooted in culture, education, openness, and shared values.

“AHEPA, with its deep commitment and pride for our shared ethnic, cultural and linguistic roots, also recognizes the inclusiveness that our magnificent Hellenic inheritance naturally fosters,” the encyclical states.

The Archbishop highlighted that AHEPA’s mission aligns closely with both the ideals of Hellenism and the welcoming spirit of Orthodox Christianity, noting that the organization brings together members from all backgrounds while working alongside local parishes to strengthen communities and expand outreach.

He also described the association as a bridge connecting the values of Western civilization and Orthodox Christianity, praising its work “from the shores of America to the shores of the Bosphorus.”

“May God bless their paramount work,” the Archbishop concluded.

In response, AHEPA said it is honored once again to receive recognition from Archbishop Elpidophoros on the occasion of AHEPA Sunday 2026. The organization encouraged its local chapters across the United States to host commemorative events and activities highlighting their charitable, educational, and community work on both a local and global level.

Founded in 1922, AHEPA remains one of the most influential Greek-American organizations, promoting Hellenism, education, philanthropy, and civic engagement throughout the diaspora.
