Bassim Mohammed will serve as the new Oil Minister, while Fouad Hussein remains Foreign Minister in the new cabinet, according to MPs cited by Reuters. Parliament approved only 14 of the ministers proposed by Al-Zaini.

The new prime minister faces major challenges, including the disarmament of Iran-backed militias and the fight against endemic corruption, while also having to balance Iraq’s relations between Washington and Tehran.

He will also need to navigate the complex political equilibrium between Baghdad, the United States, and Iran.
