Serious allegations have emerged in Skopje media regarding the interception of sensitive information from the Presidential Office of North Macedonia and its alleged transmission to foreign intelligence services.

The central figure in the case is reported to be an IT technician who worked in the Office of President Gordana Siljanovska. According to reports, the suspect had access to the presidential IT systems, where he allegedly collected data, encrypted it using special codes, and then transmitted it to the intelligence services of a foreign state reportedly not a NATO member.

The official in question was removed from his position about six months ago, and a preliminary investigation was launched last December by the Special Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime and Corruption. The case was opened following an anonymous complaint allegedly submitted by a group of employees from the country’s Ministry of Interior.

According to reports, prosecutors initially faced difficulties obtaining evidence, as the Presidential Office did not immediately hand over security camera footage. The material was later forwarded to the Interior Ministry, under which the police operate.

The Prosecutor’s Office also stated that it has been waiting for nearly two months for expert analyses of seized computers, mobile phones, and other digital devices. Meanwhile, the Interior Ministry says the technical examinations are still ongoing.

Presidential staff have already been called to testify, while the official at the centre of the investigation remains suspended until the process is completed.

President Gordana Siljanovska has so far declined to comment publicly, saying she feels “confused” by the prosecutor’s statements. Prime Minister Christian Mickoski, for his part, claimed that “structures from the past” and individuals he described as “remnants of a spying culture” are behind the case.
