Dramatic scenes emerged from the rescue of a man in the Navagio area of Zakynthos, after he fell from a height of ten meters under circumstances that remain unclear.
Fire service forces were immediately mobilized to carry out a rescue operation, as access to the area was extremely difficult.
In the video, a rescuer can be seen locating the man and, with extremely careful movements, carrying him on his back while both climb upward holding onto a rope. The images are truly shocking, since one wrong move could have been fatal, with a sheer drop directly behind them.
The Ionian Islands Region also contributed to the operation by deploying a drone equipped with a thermal camera in order to assist with the search and rescue effort in the hard-to-reach area.
In a social media post, Zakynthos Civil Protection stated:
“All’s well that ends well in the incident that occurred today at the Navagio viewing area involving a visitor to our island.
Thanks to the immediate response of the Fire Service, the 17th EMODE unit, EKAB emergency services, and the Hellenic Police, the operation was completed successfully and the young tourist is in good health.
Zakynthos Municipal Civil Protection was present from the very first moment, assisting with coordination and support of the involved services, aiming for the immediate and safe handling of the incident.
A big thank you to everyone who operated with professionalism, calmness, and speed.
Today’s mobilization once again proved the importance of cooperation among all services, especially in highly visited locations such as Navagio.
The safety of Zakynthos residents and visitors always remains our top priority.”
