The World Health Organization announced today that 116 suspected cases of the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus and 321 confirmed cases have been recorded in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

A total of 41 deaths have been recorded and six people have recovered, while in Uganda there have been nine confirmed cases and one death linked to the virus, WHO spokesperson Christian Lindmeier told reporters in Geneva, according to the Athens News Agency.

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) announced the outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus — the 17th Ebola outbreak in the Congo — on May 15, and the World Health Organization quickly declared it a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.
