Attica Regional Governor Nikos Chardalias sent a message that he will not back down in the face of threats and intimidation following the incidents and acts of vandalism that took place outside his residence on Sunday evening.

In a statement, he characterized the events as an “outrage,” adding that they terrorized an entire neighborhood and represented a direct affront to institutions and the rule of law.

At the same time, he referred to the issue of the Prosfygika housing complex, arguing that it is a problem created through decades of inaction and shifting responsibility. He noted that the Region of Attica has publicly presented a specific plan to address the issue.

Full Statement by Nikos Hardalias

“Yesterday’s acts of vandalism constitute an outrage.

The intimidation of an entire neighborhood is a direct insult to our institutions and the rule of law.

The issue of Prosfygika is the result of decades of inaction and the continuous shifting of responsibility. This negligence by the state allowed a situation to become entrenched without rules and without prospects.

The Region of Attica did not create this problem. On the contrary, we are the only ones who have publicly presented a concrete and workable plan for dignified housing and care for everyone, without demolitions and without commercialization.

Mitsotakis in Politico: EU needs new measures to tackle the weaponization of migration

Democratic dialogue cannot function under conditions of blackmail and threats. The state must finally enforce the law.

Those who speak of supposedly broadly accepted solutions without identifying them serve neither the people living in Prosfygika nor our neighborhoods. They are simply engaging in populism.

Let it be clear: no one will intimidate us. We will continue to serve solutions, not shouting, not slogans.”
