A 26-year-old woman endured a terrifying ordeal outside Panteion University on Monday evening after coming face-to-face with a foreign national accused of indecent exposure, who followed her into an underground pedestrian passage and engaged in obscene acts.
The incident occurred shortly after 7pm on Monday, when the 25-year-old illegal immigrant, who is of Yemeni origin, followed the woman as she left Panteion University and walked towards the pedestrian underpass on Lagoumitzi Street.
According to reports, he approached her inside the underpass and made inappropriate gestures. The woman then ran to a nearby café in an effort to escape his disturbing behaviour.
The victim contacted the emergency police line, and officers from the DIAS motorcycle patrol unit who responded to the incident located the suspect a short distance away and arrested him shortly afterwards.
In video footage obtained and published by protothema.gr, police officers can be seen restraining the suspect on Lagoumitzi Street before placing him in handcuffs.
Authorities determined that the man regularly frequented the particular underpass. He was already known to law enforcement, having previously been arrested three times and detained for questioning on three other occasions for lacking legal documents and in connection with an attempted theft in the Acropolis area.
A case file was opened against him on charges of offending sexual dignity and illegal entry into the country, and he was subsequently brought before a public prosecutor.
After managing to get away from the suspect, the 26-year-old woman photographed him using her mobile phone and shared the images on social media in order to warn other women about his alleged behaviour.
