A symbolic ceremony took place today (June 24) at the Dairy School of Ioannina, where Vangelis Giakoumakis had studied before his death. The Minister of Rural Development and Food, Margaritis Schinas, received the honorary diploma awarded posthumously to the late student.
“With particular emotion, I received today the diploma of Vangelis Giakoumakis from the Dairy School of Ioannina. I will deliver it to his parents on Friday. A duty of honour owed by the State to the memory of Vangelis. The Dairy School is a beacon of knowledge for young livestock farmers,” Schinas wrote on Twitter, also publishing photos of the diploma.
The case of Vangelis Giakoumakis deeply shocked Greece. The young student went missing in February 2015 and was found dead about a month later. Subsequent developments brought to light testimonies of physical and verbal abuse he had reportedly suffered.
