Politico: Trump’s Gaza Peace Council to meet in Cyprus to reassess strategy

Developments in the Middle East have “shifted attention” in recent months, officials say. The council is expected to meet for two to three days.

Donald Trump’s Gaza Peace Council is expected to undertake a strategic reset during a meeting scheduled for June 30 at a resort in Cyprus, according to an official familiar with the matter who spoke to Politico.

Two senior EU officials involved in preparing the meeting, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the gathering will take place on the island next week and will last two to three days. The aim is to provide a “restart” to the initiative after “the war with Iran completely shifted attention over the past few months,” one of the officials said.

Representatives of the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza—a body of Palestinian technocrats intended to replace Hamas in governing the Gaza Strip—will attend the meeting, along with representatives from the office of Nikolay Mladenov, the Bulgarian diplomat appointed by Trump as his special envoy for Gaza, according to the officials.

Cyprus, which aligns with the European Union’s position on the issue, will participate as an observer.

“Cyprus is not a co-organizer of the event, and the meeting is not being held at the political level. Cyprus was selected by the executive committee,” one of the officials explained.

Trump established the Washington-led Peace Council to oversee the reconstruction and governance of the Gaza Strip. The group held its first meeting in February but has made little progress due to funding challenges, logistical obstacles, and questions regarding its international and legal legitimacy.

Meanwhile, conditions in Gaza remain severe. In a recent strike, Israeli forces reportedly killed six people, including two children and an Al Jazeera cameraman.

Hamas launched its attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, killing approximately 1,200 people, the vast majority of them civilians, and taking 251 hostages. The attack triggered a major Israeli military campaign in Gaza that has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians, many of them civilians, displaced around 90% of Gaza’s population, and caused widespread destruction across the territory.

A ceasefire brokered by Trump in October 2025 resulted in the release of the remaining 20 Israeli hostages.
