The Municipality of Athens is proceeding with the free distribution of the first 100 A-rated energy efficiency air conditioners to vulnerable households across the city through the Energy Poverty Response Office (GAEF). The initiative is being implemented by the Municipality’s Development Company and DAEM, as part of the European ASCEND project.
The programme includes the free supply, transportation and installation of the units by a certified technician. Where technically feasible, the installation of electricity consumption meters will also be provided. The new energy class A appliances ensure significantly lower electricity consumption, reducing households’ energy costs while providing efficient cooling and heating throughout the year.

Who can apply
Eligible applicants are individuals who are registered residents of the Municipality of Athens, permanently live within the municipality and meet the social and financial criteria set out in the call.
Beneficiaries will be selected through a scoring system that takes into account household income, family composition, whether the applicant belongs to a single-parent or large family, as well as additional social criteria, such as the presence of elderly people or very young children in the household.
The initiative is being implemented under the European project ASCEND (Accelerating poSitive Clean ENergy Districts), coordinated by the Municipality of Athens and carried out with the participation of DAEM S.A., strengthening policies aimed at tackling energy poverty and promoting a fair energy transition in the city.
Athens Mayor Haris Doukas said:
“Access to decent living conditions cannot be a privilege. By providing the first 100 air conditioners, we are supporting fellow citizens facing energy poverty, reducing their energy costs and strengthening the city’s resilience against the impacts of the climate crisis. Social policy and the green transition can and must move forward together.”
Meanwhile, the President of Development Athens, Vangelis Marinakis, stated:
“Our goal is for European funds to be transformed into tangible benefits for citizens. This initiative combines social support with the energy upgrade of homes, using modern and efficient solutions that improve citizens’ daily lives and enhance Athens’ resilience.”
