The death toll from the twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24 has been revised upward to more than 4,300, Parliament Speaker Jorge Rodríguez announced on Saturday, adding that roughly 17,000 people remain homeless and that the distribution of new housing will begin next week.
“The number of Venezuelan men and women who lost their lives directly as a result of the devastating earthquakes on June 24 stands at 4,333,” Rodríguez said at a press conference. He added that the number of injured remains unchanged, at 16,740.
The previous tally, issued the day before, stood at 4,118 dead.
