A fire alert was raised with the Fire Service on Sunday evening after a blaze broke out in the old building of the Badminton Theatre in Goudi Park, Athens. Residents in the surrounding area received a message via the 112 emergency alert system due to the dense smoke generated by the fire.
The fire broke out shortly after 8pm in a section of the disused building, prompting the immediate deployment of substantial Fire Service resources to tackle the incident.
Twenty-eight firefighters with nine vehicles are currently operating at the scene, while a specialist aerial appliance has also been deployed to reinforce the firefighting effort and allow crews to confront the flames more safely.
Due to the fire and the direction the smoke was travelling, Civil Protection sent a message via the 112 system, urging residents of the wider area to remain indoors and keep their doors and windows shut.
The message reads:
“Fire at the Badminton Theatre in the Attica Region. Smoke is heading towards your area. Stay indoors, close doors and windows. Remain on standby and follow instructions from the authorities.”
