Poros has been declared in a state of emergency due to water scarcity for a period of three months. The decision was signed by Environment and Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou, following approval from the Regulatory Authority for Waste, Energy and Water (RAAEY) and the Secretary-General for the Aegean and Island Policy.

The decision activates the special institutional framework provided for areas facing serious water resource shortages, allowing the competent authorities to proceed more quickly with the necessary interventions to secure the island’s water supply.

The declaration of a state of emergency in Poros aims to ensure more effective management of limited water reserves during the summer period, when demand increases significantly due to tourism activity and higher consumption. It also allows for the immediate implementation of emergency measures and the acceleration of projects or actions deemed necessary to address the issue.

Water scarcity has become one of the biggest challenges facing many Greek islands and coastal regions in recent years, as reduced rainfall, high temperatures and increased summer demand place significant pressure on available water resources. For this reason, the ministry is closely monitoring conditions in areas experiencing water shortages in order to take timely measures.

With this decision, the relevant authorities gain greater flexibility to implement interventions that will strengthen Poros’ water supply security and reduce the risk of disruptions in water availability during the coming months.
