Evia MP Symeon Kedikoglou, who had been elected with SYRIZA, has resigned his parliamentary seat. Mr. Kedikoglou had announced in advance both his resignation as a SYRIZA MP and his decision to join forces with Alexis Tsipras‘s Hellenic Left Alliance on 14/07 during an interview on Action24 television.

Speaking then about his decision to resign his parliamentary seat, Mr. Kedikoglou initially stated: “I had announced it in advance. I joined SYRIZA as part of the expansion carried out by Alexis Tsipras in 2023. When the person with whom I had reached an agreement resigned just a few days later, politically it became a very difficult situation for me. Together with my colleagues, we carried out significant parliamentary work. I thanked them and I truly appreciate them without limit. Since I believe that Alexis Tsipras is the person I should follow, I could not have one foot in two boats. I could not remain a SYRIZA MP while at the same time praising Mr. Tsipras. I did what I said I would do. For me, it was a matter of consistency between words and actions. I am doing what I believe is right. I considered resignation to be the most appropriate course.”

He added at another point: “We also have a situation where we do not have a president. We submit the resignation letter to the president, but SYRIZA does not have a president.” “I will seek to join ELAS,” he said elsewhere.

Elsewhere in the interview, he maintained that he has not been in contact with Alexis Tsipras, while stressing that “with the momentum I see for ELAS, this is just the beginning. The real test will come when the time for the elections arrives. People tell me, ‘It’s about time you did this.'”
