The activation of 388 new traffic cameras across Attica is in its final stages. The cameras will monitor and record drivers who run red lights.

According to Minister of Digital Governance Dimitris Papastergiou, the equipment has already been installed, and the new cameras are expected to become operational within the next ten days.

Speaking to SKAI, the minister said that the Attica Region’s project has been completed, with the cameras already in place and scheduled to begin operating shortly.

“They have been installed and will soon be operational, allowing us to prevent the most dangerous traffic violation of all: running a red light. I want to stress that it is important for citizens to feel safe,” Mr. Papastergiou said.

The minister also noted that, so far, the cameras have recorded approximately 4,000 red-light violations, with the relevant fines being sent to offenders within a few hours.

Regarding the artificial intelligence-powered cameras, which are capable of detecting violations such as running red lights, using a mobile phone while driving, failing to wear a seatbelt or helmet, and other traffic offenses, Mr. Papastergiou said that they are already operating on Syngrou Avenue, Mesogeion Avenue, and Vouliagmenis Avenue. Two additional cameras are expected to be added soon.

Asked about the possibility of incorrect recordings by the system, Mr. Papastergiou clarified:

“In the early stages—before the system was fully calibrated and users became familiar with its operation—0.7% of the fines issued resulted in successful appeals. However, recently, no such cases have been recorded.”
