The Region of Attica has completed the installation of 388 red-light enforcement cameras at selected intersections across the Athens metropolitan area, marking the completion of one of the region’s most significant road safety projects in recent years.

The camera locations were identified by the Attica Traffic Police Directorate based on accident data and operational experience, focusing on intersections with a high risk and frequency of crashes caused by drivers running red lights.

The project, with a total budget of €13.38 million (excluding VAT), was financed through the Recovery and Resilience Facility under the Road Safety Improvement Program.

The cameras will operate 24 hours a day and will exclusively record red-light violations. For each offense, they will transmit high-resolution evidence to the Hellenic Police, including six photographs and one video, ensuring that violations are verified with complete accuracy and transparency.

To safeguard privacy, the system has been specifically designed so that vehicle occupants cannot be identified.

The Region of Attica is now working with the Ministry of Digital Governance and the relevant departments of the Hellenic Police to complete the integration of the system with the traffic police’s digital infrastructure before it becomes fully operational.

Hardalias: A Project Focused on Prevention and Saving Lives

Commenting on the completion of the project, Attica Regional Governor Nikos Hardalias said:

“The Region of Attica has fulfilled yet another important commitment to its citizens. All 388 cameras have been installed and are ready to become another valuable tool for improving road safety. Running a red light is not merely a traffic violation—it is one of the most dangerous and antisocial behaviors on the road, capable of costing human lives in a single second.

From the outset, we made it clear that this is not a revenue-generating project. It is a project centered on prevention, responsibility, and the protection of human life. The Region has fulfilled its role, delivering the project on schedule. We now expect the State and the relevant ministries to complete the remaining procedures as quickly as possible so that the system can deliver what it was designed for: greater road safety and fewer fatalities on Attica’s roads. Every day this important tool remains unused is a lost day for road safety.”

Part of a Broader Road Safety Plan

The installation of the 388 cameras forms part of the Region of Attica’s broader road safety strategy, which includes 31 projects with a combined budget of €192.9 million. Of these, 18 projects (58%) have already been completed, are under construction, or are in the tendering phase, while the remaining 13 projects are in the planning and maturation stage, with tenders expected to be launched by the end of 2028.

The Region of Attica is responsible for maintaining a highly complex road network that includes:

• 1,623 km of roads
• 157 road bridges
• 12,780 traffic signals
• 3,592 pedestrian crossings
• 38,291 street-light poles
• 610 km of safety barriers

Annual maintenance costs for this network amount to €43.2 million, excluding the cost of new infrastructure projects.

Using Recovery and Resilience Facility funding, the Region has also completed:

• Installation of 101 modern unsignalized pedestrian crossings at high-risk locations (project budget: €6.6 million).
• Installation of 1,362 LED lighting units in 31 vehicle underpasses (project budget: €6.5 million).

In the coming months, upgrades will also be completed on three major Attica avenues—Katehaki, Alimou, and Liosion—including new asphalt surfaces, road markings, and targeted improvements to hazardous manholes, in a project valued at more than €2 million.

The common objective of all these interventions is to reduce road accidents and create safer conditions for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists.
