A fire broke out on Friday afternoon (24/07) in an area of low vegetation in the Municipality of Gortyna, Crete, triggering an immediate response from the Heraklion Fire Service.
According to reports, the fire does not currently threaten homes or businesses.
The firefighting operation involves 28 firefighters, one team from the 3rd Special Forest Operations Unit (EMODE), volunteers and seven fire engines, while a helicopter is assisting from the air.
The Municipality of Gortyna is also supporting the operation by providing water tankers.
Meanwhile, the Heraklion Arson Investigation Unit has been activated and has taken over the investigation into the cause of the wildfire.
