A prosecutor’s order has been issued for the arrest of the partner of the man accused of stabbing to death a 41-year-old paramedic with the National Centre for Emergency Care (EKAB) on the Cycladic island of Syros. The order relates to her arrest on a charge of complicity in homicide.
What the CCTV footage shows
Analysis of security camera footage shows the 41-year-old woman arriving outside the couple’s home wearing the trousers of her EKAB work uniform, gloves, and with her face partially covered. She was carrying a rucksack on her back and held a plastic bag and a knife in her hand. According to the same information, the rucksack found in her possession contained an air rifle and a crowbar.
The footage is also said to show that, after arriving outside the property, she set the rucksack down on the ground, remained outside the entrance for a few minutes, and then rang the doorbell. Despite wearing gloves, she appears to have used the plastic bag to press the buzzer.
According to the information gathered so far, the door was opened by the man’s partner. An attack on the woman with a knife is then reported to have followed, leaving her with a minor injury to the abdomen. The man is then reported to have grabbed a second knife from inside the house and stabbed the 41-year-old in the back.
A chase then followed outside the property, during which, according to the same sources, the man is reported to have thrown a flowerpot that struck the 41-year-old on the head, before also hitting her with a chair.
The same sources state that the man asked a passersby to help restrain the 41-year-old, with one of them intervening while his partner called for help.
The 41-year-old later succumbed to her injuries. The preliminary investigation continues in order to clarify all the circumstances of the case.
What a witness who met the woman in Syros shortly before her killing says
Testimony continues to add to the picture of the case that has shocked Syros, in which the victim was the 41-year-old EKAB paramedic. Police are continuing to investigate every aspect of the case as they search for answers that will shed light on exactly what preceded the tragedy.
The 41-year-old man believed to be involved in the case is facing a homicide charge, while investigations are focused on analysis of the video footage and witness statements.
Of particular interest is the testimony of a person who knew the victim and spoke to protothema.gr, describing having encountered her by chance on the street a few hours before the tragic incident, and being struck by the way she was dressed.
“I knew the woman who was killed. That day we came face to face on the street and I was struck by the fact that her face and hands were covered, with gloves, to the point that she wasn’t recognisable. She was walking with her head down so I wouldn’t notice her. She only lifted her gaze for a moment before lowering it again immediately. She was wearing her work uniform, but had other clothes over it, and was covered with a hat, hood or scarf. She was walking very fast, and the whole image struck me,” the witness said.
What the witness describes appears to be consistent with the evidence gathered by authorities from security cameras. According to reports, the 41-year-old was recorded arriving outside the house wearing the trousers of her work uniform, gloves, and with her facial features covered. She had a rucksack on her back and was carrying a plastic bag and a knife.
Although the picture of her final movements is becoming increasingly clear through the video footage and witness accounts, the central question facing investigators remains unanswered: what led to the devastating outcome?
Police continue to examine all the evidence, aiming to fully clarify the circumstances under which the tragedy unfolded and to shed light on the motives behind a case that has shocked the island’s community.
The 41-year-old went to the couple’s house with a knife, an air rifle and a crowbar
The video footage gathered from security cameras, combined with witness reports and findings by authorities, is gradually building a picture of what preceded the tragedy, although it does not yet answer with certainty why it happened.
For their part, the couple maintain it was an attempted robbery. Meanwhile, people close to the victim claim the woman had gone to the couple’s house to collect unpaid rent. Police are leaning towards the first scenario, though they are not yet fully convinced.
According to reports, the case file being compiled is expected to concern the man who fatally injured the 41-year-old exclusively, with no indications so far of any criminal involvement on the part of his partner.
At the same time, police sources say that no evidence has so far emerged to confirm the claim of a financial dispute or unpaid rent, as had been suggested by people close to the 41-year-old. This possibility continues to be investigated, though it does not, so far, appear to be confirmed by the available evidence.
