A Memorandum of Cooperation was signed by the President of the Hellenic Parliament, Nikitas Kaklamanis, and the Rector of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), Professor Gerasimos Siasos, launching a new period of strategic cooperation between two of the country’s leading and historic institutions in the fields of education, research, internships, scientific documentation, and the promotion of democratic and institutional education.
The signing ceremony was also attended by NKUA Vice Rectors Professors Stathis Efstathopoulos and Christos Karagiannis, as well as former Rector, member of the Parliament’s Scientific Council and Special Advisor to the President of Parliament, Emeritus Professor Dimosthenis Assimakopoulos.
The cooperation aims to create a stable framework for joint initiatives that will strengthen the connection between academic knowledge and democratic institutions, while contributing to the development of actions with high scientific and social value.
Under the Memorandum, the two institutions will pursue, among other initiatives, the development of joint research and educational programmes, the organisation of conferences, workshops, seminars and open lectures, the exchange of expertise and scientific data, the preparation of studies on issues including parliamentarianism, public policy, law, digital governance and social cohesion, as well as joint participation in national and European funding programmes.
Particular emphasis is also placed on internships and educational opportunities for University of Athens students, who will be able to participate in activities of the Hellenic Parliament, gaining valuable experience in research, archival and educational fields.
At the same time, the agreement provides for the utilisation of the Parliament’s digital and information resources, cooperation on digital transformation and technological applications, as well as the development of a joint communication strategy to promote the shared initiatives of the two institutions.
The University of Athens and its Technical Services Department will also contribute to important technical projects within the Hellenic Parliament.
The cooperation between the Hellenic Parliament and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens is expected to substantially strengthen institutional knowledge, scientific documentation and international outreach, highlighting the important role that the two historic institutions can play in promoting democracy, knowledge and innovation for the benefit of Greek society.
Sponsorship for the University Cardiology Clinic
Nikitas Kaklamanis announced that, “as the first positive indication of this cooperation from the Parliament towards the University of Athens,” the Hellenic Parliament will provide sponsorship to the University Cardiology Clinic of the Sotiria Hospital.
The sponsorship will be submitted for approval at an upcoming Conference of Presidents of the Parliament. As he noted, this will be the third consecutive sponsorship provided to the University of Athens prior to the signing of the current Memorandum of Cooperation.
Expressing particular satisfaction as a graduate of the University of Athens himself, the President of Parliament praised the effectiveness of the institution’s initiatives and its significant contribution to shaping the character and values of new graduates.
