New photographic material from the second helicopter involved in the fatal mid-air collision during the aerial firefighting operation in Psatha has been released, as authorities continue investigating the cause of the accident.

The images, obtained by ERTnews, show the helicopter after it crashed. This is the aircraft from which the British pilot and the Greek liaison/interpreter managed to escape, abandoning the helicopter just seconds before it was engulfed in flames.

As previously reported, the collision between the two Bell AB-214 ST helicopters, which were battling the major wildfire in Western Attica on August 2, claimed the lives of the Danish pilot and the Greek coordinator aboard one of the helicopters. The crew of the second helicopter sustained only minor injuries.

Meanwhile, the investigation into the exact circumstances that led to the collision is in full progress. The case has been assigned to the Hellenic Police’s Organized Crime Division (often referred to in Greek media as the “Greek FBI”).

According to reports, three independent aviation experts will be appointed to examine different aspects of the accident and prepare separate technical reports. Investigators will also take statements from everyone involved and analyze all available video footage and technical evidence.

Drone Survey at the Crash Site

Earlier today, a team from the Directorate for Arson Crime Investigation (DAEE), led by the agency’s director and specialized investigators, visited the crash site.

A drone was deployed to produce a comprehensive aerial survey of both the impact site and the surrounding area. The footage collected will be evaluated together with other evidence and submitted to the competent prosecutorial authorities as part of the investigation.

Who Is Responsible for the Investigation?

Sources at the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection clarified that responsibility for investigating the aviation accident lies with the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) because the two McDermond helicopters, leased by the Greek government for aerial firefighting operations, are registered in the United States.

According to the same sources, the company has already notified the FAA, which has initiated the procedures required under U.S. aviation regulations.

The ministry also noted that Greece’s Hellenic Air and Rail Accident Investigation Authority (EODASAAM) does not have legal jurisdiction to investigate accidents involving aerial firefighting aircraft. However, if requested, it may assist the Hellenic Police by providing technical expertise during the investigation.
