Alaina Hall, the wife of Sharif Ahmadzai, the 28-year-old Afghan lightweight boxer accused of murdering British volunteer Elisabeth-Jane Ross, gave a revealing statement to authorities on the last day of July, sources reveal.

In her testimony, the woman described how she met the suspect, the life the couple had built together in Greece, and their contact with the 38-year-old Briton, known to friends and family as Lisa. She also recounted a series of incidents that, she said, only caused her serious concern in hindsight.

How they met Lisa, and their final encounter

Hall said she first met Ross in February 2026 through shared volunteering work and Christian church gatherings. She described her as “a really pleasant, sweet person, easygoing, with a good soul, who genuinely believed her purpose in life was to help others.”

According to her statement, the last time she saw Ross was on 12 July, after a Bible study meeting. When the session ended, Ross asked her to join her for a walk, but she declined because she had another appointment. “She then suggested the same to my husband, who agreed to accompany her, probably because he realised she really wanted company. In the end we all walked together part of the way, and then my husband stayed with her alone.”

Six days later, on 18 July, Ross texted her to ask whether she wanted to take part in a food distribution in Malakasa, north of Athens. The 38-year-old never replied. When she asked her husband if he knew anything, he told her their last contact had been on 15 July, when Ross had asked him to accompany her to deliver a Bible to someone.

“He told me their last contact was on 15 July. As I understood it, Lisa had asked him to go with her that afternoon somewhere, to give someone a Bible. My husband ended up not going with her. What I saw on my husband’s phone that day, if I remember correctly, was a missed call from Lisa and a message that read, ‘thank you for your intention to come with me.'”

The night-time absence that raised her suspicions

Particular weight in her statement falls on her account of what happened on the night of 15 to 16 July. She said she woke up around midnight and found that her husband was not at home. “I checked his location on my phone… I saw he was inside the flat on Rethymnou Street. I found it strange, because there was no particular reason for him to be there at that hour.”

According to her testimony, when she called him, he told her he had been watching a football match at a cafe in Victoria Square, central Athens, and had only gone to the flat to use the toilet. The witness also referred to the couple’s decision to leave Athens suddenly on 18 July.

Hall said that on that day her husband appeared particularly upset, telling her he had learned of the death of a relative in India. “He told me he wanted to calm down, and asked if we could go to Arachova… Because I saw him so upset, I did not want to spoil things for him.”

‘I thought the woman in the suitcase was Lisa’

The most striking moment in her testimony concerns the early hours of 29 July, by which point she had already learned that the Briton was missing. “At around 3am I woke with a start and thought of something terrible. I remembered the body of a woman that had been found inside a suitcase, at a spot very close to our home. I was extremely afraid that the body that had been found belonged to Lisa.”

She said that on the morning of the same day she messaged Ross to check she was alright. Shortly afterwards she received two replies which, she said, immediately raised her suspicions. “Those messages were not in Lisa’s style, either in the level of English or in the use of emojis, which she never used.” She added that she tried to call her but received no answer.

‘All of this made me feel uneasy’

In her statement, she said that piecing together the dates, the messages and her husband’s odd behaviour led her to draw various conclusions. “I don’t know what to tell you, but all of the above made me feel uneasy. Especially combining dates, messages and my husband’s behaviour, I’m having various thoughts that make me feel uncomfortable.”

After the body was formally identified as that of Ross, the woman said she became even more afraid, adding that both she and her husband left their home and spent nights in different locations.

She also reported receiving threatening messages containing photographs of herself and her baby, along with threats against her family. Investigators from the Hellenic Police handling the case believe these messages were sent by her husband himself, in an attempt to deflect suspicion from himself.
