Google has published a case study spotlighting Cloudevo, a Greek technology company and Google Cloud Premier Partner, for its work applying artificial intelligence to real newsroom operations. Cloudevo is the only TechAI company in Greece, and one of just a handful across Europe, to receive this kind of recognition from a hyperscaler, in this case Google itself.
Cloudevo was spun out of the digital team at ProtoThema, Greece’s largest online news publisher, with roughly 1.5 million unique daily visitors. That connection gave Cloudevo a live testing ground for its AI tools. Since 2024, the company has partnered with the Google News Initiative and FT Strategies to explore responsible AI adoption in digital news, building its tools on Gemini and the Gemini Enterprise Agent platform.
Cloudevo’s work included a Greek-language comment moderation algorithm that took ProtoThema from handling 30,000 comments a month to 320,000, cutting publication time from hours to about 90 seconds. It also built an automated translation workflow for ProtoThema’s English-language edition, a semantic search tool that drove a 20% lift in search traffic, and an “AI Takeaways” summary feature that helped cut bounce rate from 60% to 47%.
“ProtoThema is very tech-forward,” says Aliya Itzkowitz, Senior Manager at FT Strategies. “They’re never afraid to try new technologies and embrace them faster than many other organization,” a mindset Google credits as part of what shaped Cloudevo’s own approach to building AI products.
“It’s really impressive to see this kind of innovative, forward-looking approach,” says Camila Samilian, Google’s News Partnerships Manager for Southern Europe. Google has now added the Cloudevo partnership to its portfolio of international case studies on responsible AI use in digital media.
