A 59-year-old man has been remanded in custody for arson after setting six fires within a few days in Sindos, an industrial area on the outskirts of Thessaloniki.

Earlier today, the man appeared before the investigating magistrate, where he claimed he had started the fires because he was under pressure from his job. The prosecutor brought felony charges against him for continuous arson, an offence that carries a serious risk to human life and property. The prosecutor and the investigating magistrate ruled that he should be remanded in custody.

The man is accused of starting six fires in total. One broke out on Saturday 8 August, burning around 20 stremmas (roughly five acres) of agricultural land, and another on Sunday 9 August 2026, burning around 15 stremmas (roughly four acres). On Tuesday 11 August, he allegedly started four more fires in the same area.

The man’s lawyer, Anastasia Gkika, said her client “has fully accepted his actions and is remorseful for what he has done,” adding that the arsonist “claimed he did it out of foolishness” and that “there is no deeper motive behind his actions.” She stressed that “he acted this way out of recklessness and foolishness.”
