Two people were arrested in connection with fires that broke out in Trikala and Karystos by the Fire Service’s Investigative Units for Arson Offenses (A.K.A.E.E.) under the Fire Service’s Directorate for Arson Offenses (D.A.E.E.).

According to the Fire Service, a 46-year-old man was arrested in the Genesi area of Trikala as the person responsible for deliberately starting a fire using an open flame.

Further investigation uncovered evidence linking the 46-year-old to two additional fires that had broken out in the same area in previous days. The man was arrested under the flagrante delicto procedure by the Trikala investigative unit, while the preliminary investigation remains ongoing to fully establish his involvement and the incidents attributed to him.

Meanwhile, regarding a fire that broke out today at approximately 12:50 p.m. in the Komito area of Karystos, a 47-year-old man was arrested under the flagrante delicto procedure by the Euboea investigative unit. He is accused of causing the fire through negligence while carrying out hot work at a wind farm. He was also issued an administrative fine of €6,641.25.

It is noted that from January 1 through August 18, 2026, a total of 728 administrative fines have been imposed, amounting to €1,169,189.70. During the same period, 305 arrests were made under the flagrante delicto procedure: 272 (89.18%) involved negligence, while 33 (10.82%) involved intentional acts.

The Fire Service stressed that the Directorate for Arson Offenses and its investigative units continue their investigations with undiminished intensity to identify and arrest individuals who deliberately cause fires. They also urged citizens to strictly follow fire-safety regulations and avoid actions that could inadvertently cause a fire.

The Fire Service further emphasized that it takes a strict stance against any action—whether intentional or negligent—that could cause a fire and place human lives, property, or the natural environment at immediate risk. Every such incident is thoroughly investigated, and those identified as responsible are brought before the justice system without delay.
