Nancy Kissinger, wife of former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, has died at the age of 92. She died on Thursday (August 29) at her home in South Kent, Connecticut, her family announced.

News of her death was first reported by The New York Times, while numerous figures from the political and diplomatic worlds paid tribute to her.

Former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg highlighted Nancy Kissinger’s significant presence in public life, emphasizing her role as an adviser and close associate of her husband.

In a post on X, he described her as a woman of strong judgment and discretion, with deep knowledge of international affairs.

Nancy Kissinger was not limited to the role of the wife of a leading American diplomat. She accompanied Henry Kissinger on numerous international missions, took part in important diplomatic engagements and stood alongside him at meetings with leaders from around the world.

The couple became one of the most recognizable duos in American political life, appearing at official events, dinners and White House receptions during the Nixon and Ford administrations.

The moment that went down in history

One incident that shaped Nancy Kissinger’s public image took place in 1982, when she confronted a man who verbally attacked her husband at Newark Liberty International Airport.

She grabbed the man by the neck and told him to stop, in a move that attracted considerable media attention.

The case went to court, but the judge acquitted her of the assault charge, determining that her reaction had been spontaneous and provoked by the man’s insulting behavior and her concern for her husband, who was due to undergo heart surgery at the time.

Nancy Kissinger is survived by her two stepchildren and five step-grandchildren.

Henry Kissinger died in November 2023, at the age of 100.
