Markos Rodríguez Pantoja, known as “the wolf boy of the Sierra Morena,” has died at the age of 80 in Ourense, Spain. His story became one of the most remarkable and rare cases of a child living for years cut off from human society, growing up among wolves.

According to the Spanish website 20minutos, of his 80 years, 12 were spent living out in the wild, with no human contact and with a pack of wolves as his only companions. He later said those were the happiest years of his life, in contrast to his difficult childhood, which was marked by unhappiness, abuse and hunger.

Markos was born in 1946 in Añora, in the province of Córdoba. At just three years old, he lost his mother, who died giving birth to the family’s eighth child. His father remarried, but his stepmother, who already had a child from a previous marriage, is reported to have mistreated him from an early age.

The family later settled in Fuencaliente, in the Sierra Morena region. According to the Spanish outlet La Vanguardia, when Markos was only six, his family sold him to a livestock farmer, who sent him to live with a goatherd in a cave in the mountainous area of Cardeña.

Some time later, the goatherd died, leaving the young boy alone in the wild. It was then, according to Spanish media reports, that he made contact with the wolves, which, by his own account, accepted him and cared for him as one of their own: “The first contact I remember with the wolves is falling asleep alongside their cubs,” he said in an interview in 2010.

Markos managed to survive in the harsh terrain, having already picked up basic skills from the goatherd. For 12 years he lived cut off from other people, learning to move through the wild, find food and communicate through sound.

As he described it, he lived “like one of the wolves.” He developed his own way of communicating with the animals, using sounds and howls, and he also learned to mimic birdsong, call to deer and carve makeshift wooden flutes.

“If I wanted to fish, I’d go to the river. If I wanted a rabbit, I’d catch one. If I wanted a deer, I’d call my parents, the wolves, with a howl,” he had said.

In 1965, at the age of 19, he was found by Spain’s Civil Guard. Because he howled and resisted, officers tied him up and took him back to Fuencaliente. Nuns and a priest attempted to teach him to speak again, to dress, to walk upright and to use cutlery.

He was later admitted to the Vallejo Foundation’s rehabilitation hospital in Madrid, and once deemed ready to return to society, he moved to Mallorca, where he stayed in a hostel and worked to cover his living costs.

Even so, life among people was never easy for him. He described feeling that people didn’t understand him, and that he struggled to adapt to society’s rules.

Despite these difficulties, Markos devoted a large part of his life to nature, and was invited by municipalities and organisations to speak about his experience with animals. He had a particular fondness for children, to whom he often spoke about the need to love and care for animals.

Those who knew him described him as a “Spanish Mowgli,” a man bound to the earth, the air and the wild. He never hid the fact that the happiest years of his life were the ones he spent with the wolves.

In his later years he lived in Rande, near Ourense, where he was taken in by Manuel Barandela Losada, a retired police officer whom he called “chief.” After Barandela’s death, a Dutch family took over his care.
