New evidence has come to light in the case of the infant found dead in an apartment in Kypseli, with the forensic examination showing that the child had at least 10 stab wounds to the back.

During the investigation, the infant’s father testified, among other things, that the baby cried constantly, and also referred to his wife’s condition. He further claimed that at the maternity hospital their baby had been swapped for another child, which he described as “satanic”.

“The baby was crying constantly and my wife was in a bad way. They swapped him at the maternity hospital and gave us another one that was satanic, and as soon as he died our house calmed down,” he reportedly told police, according to reports.

Criminal charges over drug trafficking

The three people arrested appeared in court today at the complex housing the former Evelpidon Military Academy, where the Athens courts are based, and charges were brought against them: a felony charge of drug trafficking and a misdemeanour charge of failing to report the discovery of a body. They are a Greek man, a German woman and another man of Afghan origin.

Following the charges, the three defendants were referred to an examining magistrate. Police investigations are continuing, however, in order to establish the circumstances in which the infant, found inside a suitcase, died. Once the police investigation is complete, the evidence will be forwarded to the prosecuting authorities so that criminal proceedings can also move forward on that front. According to the forensic report, the infant had suffered 10 blows before dying.

At least 10 stab wounds to infant’s back

The child’s death is being treated as a criminal act, according to the findings of the forensic examination carried out by forensic pathologist Symeon Mesogitis.

During the examination, Mesogitis identified at least 10 stab wounds of varying sizes on the infant’s back, as a result of which the case is being treated as infanticide.

According to assessments so far, the baby was born and subsequently killed. However, it has not yet been possible to establish either the infant’s exact age or the time of death.

Authorities had found the dead infant inside a container, which had been hidden in a suitcase, in an apartment in Kypseli.

Following the discovery of the corpse, an investigation was launched into the circumstances of the death, and inquiries are continuing in order to clarify every aspect of the case.

The resident who alerted the building manager to what she had observed happening in the block of flats, speaking to Orange Press’s camera, said that the couple had been living on the second floor for around a month, adding that she had seen the children going out alone into the street in the mornings. Her husband stressed that the front door was often left open and that they had seen people waiting outside who signalled with their phones to be let in. Ultimately, this behaviour led her to alert the building manager.

Meanwhile, information regarding a 15-year-old girl, who is pregnant, and a nine-year-old boy, one of two boys who were in the Kypseli apartment when officers from the DIAS motorcycle police unit responded to a complaint from the building manager, indicates that they were found to be suffering from sexually transmitted infections. Police sources also confirm that suitcases containing sex toys were found in the Kypseli apartment.

The second of the two boys, aged 12, is in hospital, where he is undergoing tests to determine his state of health.

The children had previously been taken to the Children’s Hospital, and a file had already been opened on them by social services.

“The Afghan man hit the 15-year-old and I locked up their things so they couldn’t leave”

At the same time, the apartment’s building manager, speaking to protothema.gr, describes “strange” relationships between the people found inside the flat, and reveals that the 15-year-old girl was beaten by the 25-year-old Afghan man who was arrested.

He is the person who, upon realising something was going on in the property, alerted the police and then locked up the couple’s belongings so that they could not disappear.

“Because there was some issue over payments, and we’d also had complaints from the building’s management, I suspected something was going on. I went to the apartment to see what was happening, and where there should have been three people I saw six, including an Afghan man, and things started not making sense, so I locked their belongings inside on the pretext that the man who was later arrested for drugs would come and that he wouldn’t be able to leave without paying what he owed. I wasn’t interested in the money, I just realised something was wrong.

They left the flat in an appalling state. I waited for the man to come afterwards, but he wasn’t answering his phone, and during all this a little girl came out, the one who is pregnant by the Afghan man, and he started hitting her inside the room,” says the building manager, who believes the flat had been rented using a fake ID.

“They stayed in the apartment for around a month; they had booked it for two people. Then a nine-year-old child came out of one of the rooms, who looked nothing like the others. That’s when I started to suspect something and I locked up all their things. Inside the flat there were some sex toys, a camera, a laptop and drugs. There was no logical connection between their relationships, none of it made any sense,” he adds.
