Deliberations by the 12 jurors tasked with deciding the fate of Lindsay Clancy, who killed her three children in the US, continued for a sixth day. During today’s proceedings, her defence attorney, Kevin Reddington, presented the court with letters of support that he said his client had been receiving from around the world.

Reddington brought a box of letters for the defendant to court, which he said had been sent to his office by supporters “from all over the world”. “She reads them all,” the lawyer added. Reddington handed the letters to Clancy’s parents in court.

Several of Clancy’s supporters who have attended her trial in recent weeks told CNN that they too had been writing letters. Some even discussed the possibility of visiting Clancy at Tewksbury State Hospital, where she is being held.

The case has divided the US, with her lawyers clashing with prosecutors in court over whether the mother was suffering from postpartum psychosis when she committed the killings.

The 12 jurors, nine women and three men, had told the judge on Tuesday and Wednesday (1 and 2 September) that they were unable to reach a unanimous verdict. Judge William Sullivan then issued the Tuey-Rodriguez instruction, which effectively asks jurors to consider how reasonable the views expressed during deliberations are. Should the jury remain deadlocked, the judge could still declare a mistrial.

The Massachusetts mother is charged with murder after strangling her three young children in 2023. Prosecutors argued that Clancy acted “deliberately, rationally and quickly” to kill her children, while the defence maintained that she should not be held criminally responsible, as she was suffering from postpartum psychosis.
