E-Thrombosis: Thromboembolic Disease and Computer Use

The phenomenon of “e-thrombosis”: thromboembolism associated with prolonged sitting, immobility, and computer use

Prolonged sitting and computer use have become an integral part of modern life, but they may also pose hidden risks to our vascular health. Dr. Nikolaos Paraskevas explains the phenomenon of e-thrombosis, its association with deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and the importance of prevention.

What is Deep Vein Thrombosis and Why Should We Be Concerned?

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a common but potentially dangerous vascular condition, as it can lead to pulmonary embolism — a life-threatening complication.

Thromboembolic disease typically occurs when three key factors coexist, collectively known as Virchow’s triad:

  • Increased blood clotting tendency (hypercoagulability)
  • Disrupted blood flow, such as venous stasis
  • Damage to or dysfunction of the venous endothelium

The Role of Immobility

Venous stasis caused by immobility is one of the most widely recognized risk factors. It is frequently observed in bedridden patients, as well as in people who remain seated for extended periods during long-distance travel, such as long-haul flights.

In recent years, however, the scientific community has turned its attention to a more “modern” form of immobility: prolonged sitting in front of a computer, whether for work or leisure.

When Sitting Becomes Dangerous

The association between prolonged sitting and venous thromboembolism (VTE) is not new. As early as 1941, Simpson reported an increased incidence of fatal pulmonary embolism among people who remained seated for extended periods in air-raid shelters during World War II.

Since then, numerous studies have confirmed that prolonged sedentary immobility can significantly increase the risk of VTE. Researchers have also demonstrated that even simple movements can make a difference. In 2007, Hitos and colleagues showed that specific lower-limb exercises significantly improve venous blood flow during prolonged sitting.

E-Thrombosis: A Disease of the Digital Age

The phenomenon of “e-thrombosis” was first described in 2003, referring to thromboembolism associated with prolonged periods of sitting motionless in front of a computer.

Its potential seriousness was further highlighted a few years later. A 2010 study found that individuals who spend at least 10 hours a day at a computer and remain seated for more than two consecutive hours without a break may have up to a 2.8 times higher risk of developing VTE.

An even more concerning variation is known as “gamer’s thrombosis,” which gained attention in 2004 following the death of a young man who had spent many consecutive hours playing video games and subsequently died from a pulmonary embolism.

Why It Matters Today

With the rapid expansion of the internet and the ever-increasing use of computers in our daily lives, e-thrombosis is emerging as a growing public health concern.

Modern lifestyles keep us confined to our chairs for hours at a time — often without us even realizing it.

Prevention: It’s Time to Get Moving

In the future, technology may play an increasingly important role in prevention through applications and reminders that encourage regular movement. Until then, however, awareness remains our most powerful tool.

By adopting simple preventive measures — such as taking frequent breaks, moving our legs, standing up regularly, engaging in light exercise, and wearing graduated compression stockings when appropriate — we can help reduce the risk and protect ourselves against a potentially life-threatening condition.
