Police in Thessaloniki arrested a 42-year-old woman following an inspection into alleged environmental-law violations. She is accused of having installed and operated, without the necessary permits, a beach kiosk in a coastal area that is part of the Natura 2020 protected-area network.

The arrest was carried out by officers from the Environmental Protection Department of the Thessaloniki Directorate for the Prosecution and Investigation of Crimes, following an investigation into relevant complaints.

According to police, the 42-year-old had established a commercial activity in a protected coastal zone without the required installation approval and the special permits necessary for its operation.

During the inspection, structures and equipment intended to serve customers were found on the site, including gazebos with sun-protection netting, tables and chairs, freezers and grills. A caravan was also present and was reportedly being used as a storage area.

Police authorities said the activity resulted in the unauthorized occupation of part of the beach and damage to the naturally occurring vegetation of the sand dunes.

The authorities also cited environmental degradation of the area due to pollution, alteration of the natural landscape, and disruption of the ecosystem’s balance.

Charges

A case file was opened against the 42-year-old for violations of environmental-protection legislation. She is expected to appear before the competent judicial authorities.
