The daughter and grandson of a 90-year-old woman whose body was discovered in the basement of a house in Marathon are being taken to the police station, following a complaint by her granddaughter that the elderly woman had died around 10 years ago and that her death had never been reported so they could continue collecting her pension.

The prosecutor ordered the arrest of the elderly woman’s two relatives on charges of failing to report the discovery of a deceased person, following the latest developments in the investigation.

According to information, during a police search of the house identified by the complainant in Marathon, human remains were found in the basement, reportedly belonging to the 90-year-old woman. The same sources said the elderly woman had been wrapped in plastic, while police sources reported that what was found was a skeleton. For this reason, an anthropologist rather than a forensic pathologist was called to the scene.

As for the allegation of fraud against the state, concerning the possible illegal collection of the elderly woman’s pension, this is expected to be investigated in a separate case file.

The complaint that uncovered the case

The case came to light following a complaint by the 90-year-old’s granddaughter, who approached the authorities around two weeks ago and reported that she had lost contact with her grandmother for the past decade.

According to information, the complainant reportedly identified her mother and brother — the elderly woman’s daughter and grandson — as those allegedly involved.

The same sources said she told police that her grandmother had died around 10 years ago and that her mother, with the help of her brother, had concealed the death so that they could continue receiving her pension.

The elderly woman’s grandson, speaking earlier to protothema.gr, said that his mother had reassured him by telling him that she had “taken care of” the matter concerning his grandmother.

“The last time I saw my grandmother, she was alive. After that, my mother kept telling me, ‘Don’t worry, it’s all taken care of,’” he reportedly said.

Withdrawals continued from her bank account

Meanwhile, police investigating the case have established that withdrawals were still being made from the elderly woman’s bank account as recently as August.

An investigation at the bank where her pension was deposited found that money continued to be withdrawn using the 90-year-old woman’s debit card, a matter that is now being examined by the authorities.
